To send money from Saudi Arabia to M-Pesa, use WorldRemit, Western Union (also inside stc bank and urpay) or MoneyGram — all three pay out to M-Pesa within minutes. Mind the wallet caps: M-Pesa accepts at most KES 250,000 per transaction and the wallet can't hold more than KES 500,000, so larger transfers should go to a bank account instead.

M-Pesa limits — check before you send

Limit Amount
Per transaction (receiving) KES 250,000
Per day KES 500,000
Maximum wallet balance KES 500,000

A transfer that would push the wallet past KES 500,000 will normally be rejected rather than partly credited — ask your provider how a rejected transfer is refunded, and how long it takes. Sending apps also set their own limits, so check yours in the app. For large amounts, send to a bank account at Equity, KCB or any Kenyan bank instead — every bank service above supports deposits, and Western Union and MoneyGram also offer cash pickup at agents across Kenya.

What it costs

The riyal is pegged to the US dollar, so the riyal side never moves. Your real cost is the SAR→KES rate each provider gives you, plus any fee.

Indicative rate: around KES 34.4 per SAR at the mid-market rate — the real rate you see on Google — in early August 2026. Rates move daily; check the live rate before you send.

The reliable way to compare takes two minutes: enter the same riyal amount in two apps and send with whichever shows more shillings delivered to your family. That single number already includes both the fee and the exchange-rate margin.

On the Kenyan side, receiving into M-Pesa is free. Your family pays only the normal M-Pesa withdrawal charge when cashing out at an agent — remittances themselves aren't taxed, and Kenya's excise duty applies to transaction fees, not the money you send.

Step by step (WorldRemit example)

  1. Sign up with your details as they appear on your iqama.
  2. Choose Kenya → Mobile Money → M-Pesa, and enter the recipient's Safaricom number and full name exactly as registered on M-Pesa — a name mismatch can bounce the credit.
  3. Pay with your Saudi debit/credit card.
  4. Your recipient gets an SMS confirmation, usually within minutes.

For bank-app routes (Tahweel, Enjaz), you'll need the recipient's bank account details instead; setup requirements on the Saudi side are in our full guide: How to send money from Saudi Arabia.

FAQ

Can I send directly from stc bank or urpay to M-Pesa? Both run on Western Union rails, which support M-Pesa payout — check that "mobile wallet" appears as a payout option for Kenya inside the app before relying on it.

What happens if I send more than KES 250,000? Split it across transactions/days within the wallet's KES 500,000 balance cap, or use a bank deposit — that's the practical route for big amounts.

Does my family pay tax on money I send? No tax is charged on receiving a remittance into M-Pesa; only standard cash-out fees apply when they withdraw.

What ID does the recipient need? For M-Pesa, none beyond their registered SIM. For cash pickup, a national ID and the transfer reference number.
